Is this a good, strong tree for a backyard in a Northern IL garden? [dunno]

A dawn redwood should do fine for you, Greg. They are hardy to zone 4. The main problem with them is they are sometimes damaged by early freezes in the fall if planted in a low area, so it would be better if it could be planted on a hill. I have one I planted 2 or 3 years ago, and it's already 7 feet tall! (from about a foot tall originally)
