I had hummingbirds at my feeder on and off today. Was finally able to get pics of one.

And he stuck around for close ups.

We only get the ruby throated ones here - it's so nice to see a different kind up close and personal - good job!

Very cooooooooooool Triss...
I'm with Lynne, it's nice to see other varieties...
It's neat to see him perched..
I haven't ever see one "sit".
(I always wondered why they bothered putting
those things on. [nutz] [lala] )

He came back, or one like him and I was able to get a brighter pic. Now I need to ID him.

Way cool Triss! [thumb] I wish we had more types of hummers around here....

Mine always sit and perch when they feed...unless it's a feeder without the perch! [Big Grin]

You have a male Rufous Hummingbird, Triss. That is a very common hummer in your area of the country. We get a few Rufous in Winter, here in the East. I have seen one in 18 years of birding.

They are fairly easy to photograph. You just have to be ready and have your camera set up and focused on the feeder. And, YES, hummers will sit and go dormant for LOOONG periods of time to save energy. Gram for gram they are the MOST vicious aggressive birds in the world.

Wow that's the truth Thorny....We sit and watch them fighting each other at the feeders...very territorial they are. And last year I had 3 feeders....but one was their favorite....and they'd keep on fighting for it. [Big Grin]

So far no fights here. But just the two different types. The 2nd is either and Anna's or a Black Chinned. Have not seen it close enough to tell yet. We also get the smallest hummer here called Calliope.

My feeder is 4 feet away from where I am sitting but looking through a window. I am hoping for a lot more great pics!

Triss, if your hummers bumped into your windchimes while feeding, would they be, "Hum-dingers" ?

Too funny Thorny!

I had to move the windchimes though. While it was blowing and the chimes were chiming away, no birds were to be found. Today the wind is blowing and I can hear the chimes out the back window AND see the birds at my feeders! Best of both worlds!

My wind chimes don't bother my birds at all. Oh, and by the way we have two new sightings of Ruby-Throated Hummers today. One was in Memphis, TN, and one in Little Rock, AR. That means they are about a week away from me.

Those POOR hummers are NOT in Nashville, YET! They are still 100 - 200 miles away and moving towards us at about 10 miles a day. That means they should get here next Saturday, AFTER my new feeders are filled AND hanging.
