Hi [wayey] Brian Hinson,
Welcome to The Garden Helper's Forum!!!
We are very glad you found us!

Does this look like your stuff???

redroot flatsedge

I would have to say, this plant loves water,
so cut down it's water supply...
I am an organic person, so I would not be able to help you with a chemical to kill this....
But, where is this plant?
I cant' really tell by the picture?
Is this in your lawn and it's this high?????

Let me know where it is located!
And maybe we can help some more....

Weezie

P/S. I see your location is Tampa, did you get any of that Hurricane Charley????

Brian,
Did someone put in "topsoil" for you
when your house went in??

Usually that's a sign of "swamp" dirt *for a lack of a better word* came from an area where it was wet all the time...

I had that sort of situation, I have raised vegetable beds and gardens.....
I've ordered 3 loads of tandem truck loads for all my beds, the first and second was really nice top soil, but the third, I could tell, *by the weeds that grew* where it came from....
Same as you, it had swampy weeds...
For me, I just covered my beds with landscaping fabrics, and no mulch or anything on top....
and alot of compost to make the soil very loose and if I see one popping thru, I can pluck it very easily!!!

How wide spread is it in your lawn???
Just in patches or over all????

Something I also noticed is, to cut down on it's advancing even more, I'd mow more, or more closely or something.... to not allow the weed to produce so many seeds, I can see a bunch in your picture.
Each seed head/pod can contain hundreds of seeds..
I'd see if I could get rid of those????

I'm guessin' here, as I don't know how wide spread the weeds are???
But mowing the seeds often would be my first avenue of helping eradicate it...

See if some of the other gardeners come thru with a bit more or different advice for you!!!

Weezie

Glad to hear you made out ok with Charley,
We've been following the storm closely here.

Brian,
Can you give us a picture of one stalk alone,
I am pretty sure the one Papito posted is it.
He had the yellow, mine was red, but I think he's correct..

Thanks if you can get us one!!!! [thumb] [kissies]

From the plant ID link above...
it says "Green Kyllinga has a small, round seed head whereas Nutsedges have an open spikelet."

Your photo looks more like the "open spikelet" seedhead. That's definitely what mine is! And it's pretty depressing to read how hard it is to get rid of! [tears]

anywho...

i live in tampa, it's sunny, hot, and rainy all year, so it looks like the only way to control/kill this thing is chemically.

if i read it right, and i mow my grass every 5 days, it wont spread any farther. but i have st augustine grass, and i was told it doesnt like to be cut any closer than 3 inches.

how do i win?
by afgreyparrot on August 17, 2004 04:54 PM
Brian...
Here's a picture of what I have.
According to the links above, mine is Nutsedge.
BUT... mine does not have the tubers like in the photo!
Mine is just like yours when I pulled it up!
So, wonder what's up with that???

This stuff, WHATEVER IT IS, is taking over my yard, too.
As you can see in the first photo, it even comes up BEAUTIFULLY between two rocks that you couldn't even put a piece of PAPER between!!!!!

[nutz]

Is this the same as what you have?

That's nice to hear.
I'll have to get to Lowe's and check that stuff out tomorrow.
It's taking over my yard!!!

Wow, what I miss when I am gone for a bit. I have this "grass" growing in one of my flower beds. I thought it was my triplet lillies for the longest time. [Big Grin] . But I only put out like 10 bulbs and there are close to 30 individual plants growing in a cluster next to my snowball bush. [Mad] I guess I will get out there this weekend and get to killing some plants.

Thanks for the sympathy, but since I am not a completely organic gardener, roundup will do the job very nicely, I just have to protect the snowball bush.

It is frustrating (pun intended) [Big Grin] when you think you have done something right, then find out it is just an obnoxious weed. [Mad] [Frown] [nutz]

Hey! [Big Grin]
I did WAY bad awhile back!

Shouldn't even ADMIT this, but there were these beautiful daisy-looking flowers all over the side of the road. Well, more like brown-eyed susans. So, I go dig them up and plant them in my yard. Turns out, when they went to seed...
...they are those pesky little prickley things that get EMBEDDED in your clothes when you brush past them! [Mad]
I planted 'em ALL OVER MY YARD! [Big Grin]
