I have stayed away from hosta because every time i see them there are ants on them... Does anyone have a problem with ants?... I have a lot of shade perfect for them but not wanting extra critters..

Oh that's no reason to stay away from this beautiful plant. No better plant for a shade garden. You should be more worried about slugs than ants. Ants won't do any damage to them. There are literally thousands of hosta varieties. I am always coming home with another variety I don't have. I'm up to about 20 with more than a fifty on my wish list.
