Need Help with California Lilac

I have a beautiful California Lilac that is about 5 feet high. It was beautiful last summer and gave lots of blooms.

For some reason, the top foot and 1/2 is healthy and green but the rest of it has turned brown. All the stems and leaves look dead. I'm guessing it may have been frost but I've never seen anything like it.

I live on the West Coast of Canada (not sure of my zone)

Anyone think this will recover? I just hate to loose it. It fills a corner and it will sure look bare if I have to take it out.

Any thoughts??
(I am new, hope I posted in the right place)

Weezy.....anyone ever tell you, you are a whiz at this??? They should call you Whizzy.... [Big Grin]

<Just kiddin>

Yes that's it!!! It is the most beautiful bush when out in bloom. We pruned it last fall. Could that have done it?? It has to be either that or the frost. I just don't know what to do with it now. The whole top of the plant is healthy. I suppose I could prune it and make a standard out of it. Many people use this bush for hedges too.

Any thoughts??
