A very kind woman at work just gave me a rubber plant and a wandering jew that she'd picked up at a grocery store. They are both in 3 inch pots. The problem is they're in really disgusting soil and have fungus gnats buzzing all around them.

I would like to change the soil before even taking them into my apartment. It's almost 60 degrees today. Unusually warm for southeastern Michigan this time of year. Is it safe to do it outside? I don't plan to use bigger pots. I want to use the same size, but with better potting soil.

60 should be fine for the amount of time you'll have them out there. BUT if you're using the exact same pots, make sure you wash them well. Don't want the bugs hiding in them!

Thank you. My plants are now in fungus gnat free potting soil. :-)
