Is it possible to convert a fish aquarium into a mini greenhouse to grow tropical plants? I was wondering this, because I would love to grow some tropical plants such as banana plants or pygmy date palms under ideal growing conditions. It may be easier in an aquarium to keep the humidity really high, and since most aquariums have fluroescent fixtures, you can add some kind of grow light or cool white fluroescent bulb which may really create good growing conditions. Has anyone converted an aquarium in this manner and did you have any luck at growing tropical plants in a colder climate zone such as zone 6?

Sounds like a plan, Blue . . . I'm having good luck with seeding under a fluorescent desk lamp.

I also use pieces of ordinary pop bottles (plastic) to help my plants along.

The trick is to fool the plants and seeds into thinking it's summer.

This is called a terrarium. I googled terrarium and came up with our own garden helpers' website below. Some good info here. Not sure about bananas though unless you've got a really big fish tank:)
