Earlier today, when I went to go pick up my brother from his friends house, I noticed that they had a nice-sized jade plant in the kitchen window. They invited me in, and I took a closer look of it. It was actually 4 or 5 little jade plants, all about 6 inches tall, in a big pot. They didn't look in the best of conditions( it was all dusty, and drooping a little), but good nontheless. I also noticed that there where a few babies poking up from the soil. I'm fairly certain she doesn't even know that they're there. My brother's going ther again tomorrow, and when I go to pick him up, I want to ask for 1 or 2 of the babies...thing is, I don't know how to. I really don't know the parents too well, so I don't know what they'll say... I just don't know how to ask... Any tips? (kennyso, I don't mean to point you out, but I know you had your "lucky day" recently, and got lucky with asking for all those seeds, the day you wandered during lunch or something.... maybe you can help me out? How'd you ask them? Heres a link to kennys lucky day, If your wondering what I'm talking about: http://www.thegardenhelper.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/6/4597.html ) I guess I'm just a little shy...

Just go and ask! No biggie! I know how you feel, when i first asked to pick seeds, I was a little shy, but I think the key is no is no and don't go bugging them. Also, if you have a small plant or a packet of seeds that you oculd give them that would be really nice. I don't bring anything when I go to ask, when I get home I find them a packet of seeds that I think they'd like and go over again to say thankyou. don't forget to show us your baby jade if and when you get it!

I agree- just mention how you noticed their Jade plant had babies- would they mind if you took one? I would definitely give you a jade! And like Kenny said- be very grateful!!!

Go for it! The worst they can do is say no. Being shy myself I have to think of 'if they say no' how to react. "OK well if you ever want to get rid of some (babies) keep me in mind" *insert sincere smile here*

Whoops-- sorry-- just noticed you guys posted again... (I posted in an old CH but I don't know if anybody saw it) Well, my brother came home on his own early, the parents were not home! Therefore, my brother and his friends were home alone! Who would trust their kids, and his friends home alone? Anyway, no, I didn't get it, but next time I see either parent, I'll be sure to ask them....

Well, I went to pick up my brother today, and I finally asked! The mom said yes, pulled the pot down for me, and said "take what you want". I only took two of the babies, but when i went to take them out, i noticed the soil was awfully dry... unnaturally dry, like it hasn't been watered in months! When I took the two out, they had very dry roots as well... I hope they'll survive. she gave me a plastic cup to put them in, and I rushed it home... I have to get a pot for it, because right now, it's still in that plastic cup. Here are he best pics I could get of it (darn camera )

you should read the care instructions on the garden helper's "house plant" page. Jade should have a time of dryness so that their tap root will grow deep into the soil. Especially during the winter time, you should go 2-3 weeks between waterings. They are succulants, so they hold water in their leaves.....they'll be just fine. Here is a picture of my Jade. I got her as a baby in early spring. She grew pretty quickly....apparently she likes where she is. Anyways, her leaves are a little droopy because I just repotted her a couple days ago. ....gave her a good watering about 3 hours before I moved her so she wouldn't go into shock.
Oh......what kind of soil do you have your babies in? I found bagged soil that had the right amount of sand and bonemeal in it. ...There is a leaf sitting on top of the soil in that pot. It broke off while I was repotting. I read that after the break scabs over, I can stick it in the soil and it will start to grow another plant. I hope so! ...this will be the first time I'm trying this.

It's in this new(?) Miracle-grow cactus soil with added/extra bonemeal or something...I do not have the bag in front of me, but I'll find out all the details! Hope that's ok..... This jade was to the point where the leaves were drying up, the person who gave it to me admitted she never waters it

that is the kind of soil I have mine in. It is only $2.00 now that it is not "gardening season". The great thing about the succulants is that even when the leaves are starting to shcribble, they are usually still ok. They are pretty tough little boogers. I have to mark on the calendar when I water the jade because I feel like I'm neglecting it, but then I look at the calendar....oh...only 5 days since I watered it....its ok.

Yep-- I got mine on sale at a hardware store for $1.89! It was a nice big bag, too!

Mark - I'm so glad you were able to get the babies - good for you for asking!
Jenn - the size of your jade reminded me so much of the size of the one I have from a cutting that Tina sent me last year. Now that the sun is lower in the sky, and coming into the windows better again, it's been picking up on growing too.
