I stopped mentioning Freckles because it was getting a little embarrassing! I thought the ill temper would slowly go away as he realized that I loved him, and that he was safe now. NOT! ! ! I'm not even going to go into all I have done to win this guy's heart. I have spent a fortune for doggie toys, only to have him hide them around the house and yard...using them as excuses to bite me when I get (unknowingly) near them. He's got a BAD problem with that...
In the following photo, Freckles is guarding a bag of Honey-Roasted Peanuts in front of the left Avalanche, and a dog toy in front of the one on the right. I had a doctor appointment 100 miles from here Tuesday, and I was running late (as usual), but Freckles would NOT let me get into either of the trucks! I even tried walking all the way around the house to sneak into the truck from behind! NOT GONNA HAPPEN! ! ! ! ! I was running out of patience as well as time, so I decided to just go for it. I figured if he attacked me I'd hit him with my 50 pound purse!
He came at me and I put my purse out in front of me and swung it at him...so, he clamped down on the strap and would NOT let go, finally pulling my purse out of my hand.
So...there he was, still in control, and now he had my purse!
Thank God I had my keys in my pocket!
I went back inside, called the neighbor that lives in the house you can see in the photo, behind the fence, and asked her to please open her door and yell for Freckles! (I wasn't even thinking that when he took off, he might actually take the purse with him!)
Well, she hollered for him, he took off with my purse and I took off after him! He dropped my purse in the driveway, I scooped it up and jumped into the safety of a vehicle!
Whew!
This is an example of an every day occurance with Freckles!
More to follow after I get Lola in bed! You ain't heard NUTHIN' yet!

Now I'm gonna tell you the reason why I stopped mentioning Freckles!
On Feb.1st, Freckles bit me really bad. He had bitten me "really bad" on several occasions before this, but this was REALLY, REALLY bad!
He attacked me over an Almond Joy he had stolen off the coffee table. He ended up getting my hand.
He bit down HARD, and sunk his teeth to the bone! One of his teeth went completely through my thumb nail...and one of his teeth went deep into that tender spot between my thumb and finger. He was biting down as hard as he could, shaking his head back and forth, and by the time I got my hand out of his mouth there was blood splattered all over the room!
When I got my hand out of his mouth, I ran to the bathroom, with Hell Hound in hot pursuit! I slammed the door, then grabbed a towel. It hurt so bad I couldn't hardly stand it.
When I took the towel off to look at the bite, I wasn't even surprised to find a large portion of the inside of my hand (muscle) on the outside!
That was over three months ago, and several visits to the doctor during those months. It STILL hurts, and probably will for a loooong time!
So....you ready for the next installment???

I have seen some bad dogs but normaly they will come around. He may be like a pek, that my wife hAd he was badly mistreated and would bite if you just walked by him. One day he bit my wife I slapped fire from him knocked him plumb across the room. He slowed down after that. Like you said he would be all lovey then next minute turn on you. He loved my wife a lot so got where he didn't bite her but took about a year for him to slow down never did stop altogether. Some one some where has really mistreated Freckles. But cockers have a very mean streak in them anyway. Good Luck with him.

My mom got one of the Shitsu dogs. And Eli was a very friendly dog until he turn and sunk his fangs into you. Dad was a bloody mess most of the time. Now I don't know if it is common in that breed or what but what was causing the bitting was the pain he was in. He was afraid of being touched. So if he didn't see you comming or you inadvertantly touched him he bit. There was no outward sign of injury or malformation but that's what was causing a very sweet tempered dog to be a real mence. He would want to play but you didn't dare for fear of being bitten.
I didn't read the previous posts, I'm getting ready for bed. But from what I gather that isn't freckles problem. Eli was the only "bitter" I've ever been around.
Ferole animals in our household were usually cats. And they are pretty easy to handle, leave them alone, when they leave you alone. When they attack a sharp voice and a light squat at their disappearing hindquarters and after a short time (less than 6 months) they are usually ready to cuddle up.
And with small becked feathered friends (I've never had a parrot) a short puff of air is usually enough to stop them from bad behavior.
I have in an emergency went eye to eye with a great dane over a misbehaving child, but I would leave that kind of handling to a professional. I would not try it at home. Even if there are a lot of books on the subject of that kind of leader of the pack training.
I wish you the best of luck with freckles, that's a horrible situation to be in. I would probably take the cowards way out and build him a dog house and run. That way he would feel safe and so would I.

Then I guess I need a 7.2 horsepower leaf blower for Lola! I tried that "blowing" in her face. Worked the first few times, then she started making the "blowing noise" back at me, then laughing her butt off! She's a brat!
Since you didn't read the first "Freckles" topics, Freckles has several injuries. He was hit by a car and left to heal (or die) on his own. The broken hip, leg and pelvis hurt, I'm sure, but Freckles is mean because Freckles is FRECKLES! ! ! !
He's mean when he's guarding something, which is 24/7!

Cindy, why are you taking on this animal? Do you love him lots or just feel incredibly sorry for him? He has obviously been maltreated before he was injured and the pain doesn't help matters any. The vet says (I know you have already spent an arm and a leg but Freckles old boy is about ready to tear the other arm and leg off) nothing can be done for him? Do you have a college of vetrinary medicine anywhere close? They usually have inovative treatments for less than private practice vets. AT the college near us, they have done some wonderful things for exotics and large animals...mostly horses. If you don't have that option, then I hope some other solution can be found before HH injures you permanently.

Probably it's a military background that prompts this response but I have to say it.
You have a small child and noone can watch children and animals 24/7. Spend the money on the dog run and house. Children come first.
With a permanent injury he will always be of unreliable tempermant, not really his fault. What you will save in your medical bills along with repairing damage he creates will pay for the run. You can always put some low raised beds inside the run with groundcover in them so he doesn't get his paws damaged by the concrete.
Your child should grow up with loving pets so that he will adore animals as much as you do.
I had a portion of cheek bit off when I was small by a friends english bulldog, Ginger, it wasn't really her fault. We were playing and Ginger misunderstood. When a dog wants to get up in my face I always pull away that's normal. It's a tramatic experience. I have lazy eye as a result.

just gotta hope no kids tease him with candy, huh? well- i think he guards over being hurt so many times, he fears the pain .. look at his eyes. there is hope there. ever try reverse psycology? talking to him in his own language? obedience school? giving him too much to eat so he quits guarding food? i dunno. must be love and you have alot of compassion..

Cindy, how is Freckles with children? What does the vet say, is he in continuous pain? if he is that would be why he snaps all the time. Have you tried the reverse phsycology of ignoring him?. Feel so sorry for Freckles but worry about you to. Is he still ok with Andy?. Doreenx

Owwww, Cindy. Freckles is being more than a pain in your back pocket now. You deserve a medal for investing so much caring into him. And a purple heart for being wounded in the line of duty.
I honestly don't think I could keep an animal that I don't trust. I would be too afraid. I am concerned now that Freckles might get hold of Brennan before you had the chance to stop him. You may need to come up with some safer options for your and Brennan's sake. Please be careful around him.
I know that you love Freckles, but it doesn't seem that he is returning that love. I am amazed that he would treat you in such a way. How long have you had him now?

He is hardly ever in the house anymore, because when he's inside, he will literally get up ON the table. Not just stand up with his paws on the table...he gets up and STANDS on the table!
There are always good things to steal on the table ...cell phones, pagers, pens, pocket knives, etc. He grabs something and tries to get outside with it without me noticing. A few days ago I was outside digging up some hostas to move, and Freckles started digging about 8 feet away from me, in the irises. He uncovered something and brought it right to me...A CELL PHONE!
Well, he BROUGHT it to me, but then wouldn't GIVE it to me! I hadn't even noticed it was missing, and don't know how long he'd had it buried. He took off with it when I tried to get it from him, ran around the house and came back without it! I put him in the house, called the cell phone and followed the ring until I found it...under the deck.

Was it by FiFi? Wasn't that the name of the gal he got hold of? Are they suing for child support? Make them prove he's the father before you start carting dog food over there! Or sue for custody if you haven't had enough abuse from Freckles!

Let's see..... The last time he bit me was YESTERDAY! (I have been gone all day today...so, he hasn't had a chance to bite me yet!)
The neighbor behind me whose dog had the puppies is keeping one of them (and she never spays or neuters her pets). And...the neighbor across the road from me took one of the puppies. So, there goes the neighborhood!
If Freckles belonged to ME he would have been neutered the day he arrived here. Unfortunately, it's not my decision to make.
Something like Hell Hound should NOT be allowed to reproduce!
