I've never waitressed but my daughters said I couldn't do it. That I couldn't take the crap that wait staff has to take from customers. And I've never understood how these rich restaurant owners get away with paying less than minimum wage. If the overhead is so high how do they get so rich? That is not right. And I can't stand it when I hear people call their waitress "honey" or "darling" or "sweetie". Women don't do that to waiters.
At the last hospital I worked (the one I was posting about earlier), the first day I was in orientation the nurse training me had 12 post op patients because she had a person working with her. That person working with her was me - brand new to the unit - didn't have a clue where supplies were or rooms were or anything. I should have quit right then.
We would get a post op patient to the floor at 3:30 and not be able to get to that patients room until 5:30. That's 2 hours without a blood pressure or bandage check. I complained about how unsafe that was. What if someone was bleeding out from surgery? I wrote it all out on my exit interview. From what I've heard nothing has changed. That's why you should NEVER go to the hospital alone.

I use to waitress. Hard work. When someone would call me honey or sweetie, I usually would answer with something like yes Pumpkin or babycakes with a completely straight face. It stopped most fairly fast. I can't even imagine being a nurse. I have several friends who are nurses, what a job they do. My middle daughter Annie is studying to work in infant intensive care. I can't even think of doing something like that. What if a baby died????

I think with infants you still have just a few patients. I know that several units that used to be considered acute care and were one patient to one nurse are now considered as regular med-surg units and anything goes.
Unfortunately...they do Fernie...and it is some kind of aweful!!! I hate the fact that nurses are so over worked...it is VERY dangerous for the patients. I also have a REALLY hard time with COLD uncaring physicians!! I proudly...VERY proudly had a hand in getting one fired from our little home town hospital. When my son was killed in the car accident...they were trying to get his dad & I to the hospital safely. Being a little town..the news was everywhere long before we knew. Dayne's aunt "heard" by the way about Dayne being in an accident...so she called the hospital and got the Doc on the phone...she asked if it was fact that Dayne was involved in an accident...his reply..."Yep & he's dead"... Not really the way you would like a Doc to break the news of a family member...he was history for that. First of all, it was confidential information that he should not have been giving out over the phone. Well, I don't know where that story fit in... just rambling I guess...sorry!

You know, I was just thinking how I could not bear it dealing with the constant fear of death and my daughter wants to work in that field. You gotta have a calling I suppose.

I have a couple of friends who work in the NICU and the things they have told are so heartbreaking. I know that is not something I could ever do as I would be a total wreck all of the time.

I feel very good today. I've already been to the doctor and had my hair cut. Everyone at the doctors office is sick. Wonder if they caught germs from me. I am definitely on the mend.
