Is there a difference between Baking Soda and Baking Powder, or are they the same thing?

No they are not the same. Baking powder is derived from baking soda. So they are close but no cigar lol.

In case you are interested here is a way to make your own "safe" baking powder:
For a small amount: 2 tsp cornstarch or arrowroot 2 tsp cream of tarter 1 tsp baking soda
For a larger Amount: 1 part cornstarch or arrowroot 1 part cream of tarter 1/2 part baking soda
