I have been so depressed today for a lot of reasons, one of them being because summer is over. There...I said it. Summer is OVER.
I have enough houseplants to keep me busy all winter, (especially thanks to barleychown!), but I miss my life outside so bad in the winter.
Last year I had one BIG beautiful rose outside...and we were to have a heavy frost that night. I cut the rose and dried it and have it sitting on a shelf on the wall. Since it's supposed to get down to 30 tonight, guess I'll go cut all my roses that are left, and have my last fresh bouquets for the year...and dry one of them to add to the "last rose of summer shelf"!
This forum will sure make the winter more bearable for me. Too bad I didn't have it last year, but I'm so grateful I have it now!

Well, annuals die after their done blooming no matter where they are. But there are things which are "tender perennials" which will continue living somewhere like Los Angeles. A good example is coleus. It's used as an annual most places because it's so tender. But if you keep it as a houseplant, it will live on.
So, many times, when you get something at Home Depot and it's labeled as an annual, it may actually be a "tender perennial" used in landscaping as annuals. Then there are bi-annuals like (I think) impatiens which don't bloom as profusely the second year as they do the first and then die after the second year.

JUST ABOUT . When the occasional freeze hits,I just cover them real good and they keep going on,just like the energizer bunny
I know this will get you Cindy...I'm still growing and harvesting tomatos, cucumbers, bell peppers and mexican chili peppers. I've just started broccoli, cabbage, sweet peas and lettuce!
You just about broke my heart with the reference to "The Last Rose Of Summer". It's gotta be one of the saddest lyric poems Sir Stevenson ever wrote.
'Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming all alone, All her lovely companions Are faded and gone. No flower of her kindred, No rose bud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh.
AND THAT'S JUST THE FIRST VERSE! IT GETS SADDER FROM THERE!!!
But to be honest, I like the pictures you posted and I like thinking about how life continues in other places even when we aren't exactly aware of it.
Imagine, all those vegetables heavy on the plants. Maxi would be jealous because he loves harvesting and giving his garden gifts.
