So glad to find this site--it looks great! I've tried gardening in the past and had my ups and downs with it. Now that we have our own home, I'm hoping to learn how to landscape it so that we have color in it year-round. And learn how to do things correctly, instead of "by gosh and by golly"!
I'm trying to learn about native plants (Lacey, WA area---is that a zone 7, btw?), figuring they'll be more apt to grow even if I goof up, lol!
Our lot is fairly good-sized for intown, even with the couple storage and craft buildings we've built over the last couple years. But I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get all the gardening in it that I want to try! And still leave space for a growing toddler granddaughter to play! I just love too many plants!!!!
I'm thinking of being bold and brave and trying to transplant a big old tall rose bush that's too close to the front door and a huge rhododendron that my husband wants to have elsewhere or gone--anyone had any success doing this?
I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone and to all the info that seems to be here. I hope Catlover doesn't mind sharing her Avatar--I can find something else if that would be better--didn't realize it was already being used and it's one I use with another Forum Group, heh!
BTW, did I mention I tend to be longwinded???!!!
I got the guestmap marked but the pin went in lower than I actually live and I don't see a way to change that, but it's in the general region, lol!
Be seeing you all! Happy Garden Dreams!

Just spoke with the almighty guru and he stated the little character avator in the left corners can be shared....However, the buttons at the bottom of the page cannot.
So you may choose the kitty avator as well.

My granddaughter is two and a half yrs old, and she and our daughter are currently staying with us, possibly even for a couple years, as our daughter just completed her BA and still needs to get her Masters.
So we won't be doing much planting in the center of the back yard for a while still, to let her have lots of play space and room for a swing set and sand box etc.
Instead I'm going to be concentrating on setting up the landscaping around the perimeter of the yard first, which probably is a good idea anyway.
I'm researching hedges, flowering shrubs--especially ones that are native, and dwarf fruit trees, plus shorter flowering bushes that would fill in below the taller ones.
So far the house came with a couple forsythias (which are something I'd been wanting to brighten up the end of winter), and a big old rhody out in front of the house up against the windows of the two smaller bedrooms, and a tall old rose bush that I haven't known how to go about pruning, so it's gotten out of hand, by our front door.
Those are the two plants I'm wondering whether to try to transplant or just get rid of and start over however we decide to out front. My husband doesn't want them up against the house anymore. (For one thing, we need to paint the house either this summer or next!)
Then last week a friend gave me some freebies to transplant that I'm hoping I did ok with: two Red Flowering Currants, and a tiny start of an Indian Plum. Plus I moved an Indian Plum I had planted a couple years ago that hasn't flowered yet, and I just found out may have been getting too much sun. I didn't know it was a shade grower, so now I've got the two of those over under the edge of the birch tree shade in the back. I'm really hoping these will all live and maybe even bloom for me next Spring! But have no clue what the chances of that happening might be, lol!
I'm glad to know the Avatar picture sharing isn't a problem after all.
And the name Fayrith is part of a computer game character's name I made up: Fayrith Myrnmad--my first/principle character for a MPRG fantasy adventure game called Asheron's Call that I've been addicted to for the last three years! I have no clue where the idea for it came from--it just formed in my head when I needed to name her! And now I've gotten kinda attached to it.
Guess if you all are already used to long posts, that will save me from having to apologize all the time for mine, lol!
My coup (sp?) for today: I found a free source for rocks of various sizes--I believe these are smooth, glaciated rocks--that I can use to make borders and rock gardens!!! The maintenance and groundskeeper guy at work lives in a very rocky soil area and had to remove a whoooollllee lot of rocks to landscape his yard and says he can't begin to use them all up, and he'd love to have me come get truckloads of them carted away, hehheh!!! Wheeee!!! That's as good a score as the time I got a free garbage can full of horse manure on my birthday, hee hee!!!!
Well, better get to sleep for a bit--just got off a night shift. I get today and tomorrow off so will for sure be checking this site and forum out lots more!
Nice meeting you all! More 'nother time....
