As you all know, Veterans Day is this week. We hada special service in church yesterday for it and it was really touching. So, today I ran a search for sites that let you send a message to troops that are deployed right now. Here is a link for it in case you would like to participate. Operation Dear Abby

If you've never "been there, done that" overseas, you have no idea what a letter means to men and women who are there.

My dad was on the USS America in Vietnam.....

I wrote to him almost every single day.

Those letters meant the world to him.
He knew when it came time for "mail call", he would be getting a letter from little afgrey!

If you have a friend, family member, neighbor there, please write.

yeah. Even though some people think that we shouldn't be over there, we still need to support the troops that are there. Most of them believe we should be there. I've read all sorts of things about how the troops who fought in Vietnam were treated when they came back and its just horrible. Stephen's uncle is one of them. I'm going out today to get him a Veteran's Day card. Those men and women are fighting for our protection...fighting so that we don't have to fight a war on our own ground.

Cindy, I have a friend who is/was in the Navy. I haven't had contact with him for like 6 or 7 years, but the Navy was his life, so I'm assummming that he's still in it. Is there any way that I can find out if he's still there and deployed?? Soo much has happend over the years and I'd love to write to him.

jenn, yes you can find out about the status of former/current sailors. i'll try to remember how to do it, and let you know.

and, i meant to thank you yesterday for this post, but got caught up in other stuff. now, i have to add my 2 cents worth.

folks join the military for several reasons. most of those reasons have to do with security.

security of the nation
personal security
world security
having lived the life of a navy wife for many years, i have to comment on life over seas, and just what they are securing for us.
i have lived in countries where:
  • there were 3 (yes, that is right) prices on everything. 1 for the locals, 1 (higher) for the american military, and 1 (triple) for the tourists. is that legal? there it was.
  • the "police" collected all fines at the time of the "infraction" (traffic or otherwise). the other option was to go to the "jail" with the said "officers" where you might not be heard from again. one phone call? NOT!
  • criticizing the government was grounds for arrest
  • calling a prostitute or a theif, or any other "derogatory" "occupation" by that name was grounds for a lawsuit due to "defamation of character"
  • reporting a rape, or child abuse, or any other crime of that nature could cost the victim AND their families their job, home, and in some cases, even their life.

supporting the military is very important. i've heard from lots of folks "well, if they didn't want to do it, they should just change jobs" so here are some military facts.

most folks join between the ages of 17 and 21. much too young to have a clue what they are signing when they literally sign their life away.
a military person is subject to be called to "work" at any hour, for any length of time, at any destination, without any additional pay.

There's a lot of websites to help you find someone you were in the military with. Actually, that classmates.com site has a military section. I looked there for a friend of mine who I was close to when I lived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on a Navy base.
