Hello all. I have this plant, that I received from my grandmother seven years ago. She had given it to me from the "baby" that she cut from her original plant. I don't know what it is. It looks a little like a palm, and has little thornlike spikes on the edge of all of the leaves and on the central vein on the underside of the leaf. Could someone please ID it for me, and tell me how I can harvest the "baby" sprouts that are all over it. Thanks [*]

Nope. That plant isn't a mother-of-thousands. I don't know what it is though, other than the fact its a tropical.

Thank you, Thank you. You wouldn't believe how many garden stores were unable to id it. How would I harvest the babies from this plant? My grandmother actually grew this plant from a baby, but I have had no luck removing them from the plant. Have you done this yourself? Also, this plant is now 7 years old and I think I need to repot again but don't want to harm it in the process. Any suggestions?? Thanks so much!

I got my original from my grandma's plant, when it needed to be divided. She just took it out side, took it out of it's pot, used a bucket of water to swisk it around in to loosen the roots, and pulled it apart.
The whole thing looked kind of brutal to me, but the plant(s) was happy and healthy after...
I seem to remember being told that the 'mom' will die after making the 'pups', but I'm not sure...
Maybe someone in the houseplant section would know, now that you know a species for the plant...
