Hi,
I'm wondering what this plant is growing in the middle of my garden. Someone a while back told me it was something good, but I have no idea and now it getting very big. I don't know if I should keep it or dig it up. I'll be embarrassed if it's just a huge weed.

That's pokeweed or poke salet. They eat it here. The berries stain everything they touch too (clothes and skin). We always played with them as kids. We looked like purple smurfs. The roots are poisonous. So don't eat the roots. [tongue]

we got those growing outside my window. When my friends and I were in elementry, Lisa would hide behind the house, and when i came around the corner, she'd jump out from behind a stump, and pelt me with all the berries [Eek!]

lol we were so stupid ^.^ But it was fun!

I have that growing in my yard too. I think whoever lived here before grew it to eat because every time it rains my yard is covered. I try to pull it up by the roots but it continues to pop up.

Only the young shoots and small leaves of pokeweed are edible when thoroughly cooked in several changes of water. The berries, uncooked stems and leaves, and roots are poisonous.
