Bradford pear. Nice white blooms in early spring and burgundy fall color.

OK, it technically might not be a Bradford. There are numerous forms of Pyrus calleryana. Aristocrat, Redspire, Whitehouse, Capital, etc. This one seems to be more horizontal branching and so is more likely to be Aristocrat.

OK, thanks. I don't know anything about the different variations. (I barely know more than it's a tree, lol). I took a couple more pictures & compared the leaves & berries. The leaves look similar to my Bradford and they have similar berries...but they have thorns on the branches. Here's a couple of pics. Do the Aristicrats have these thorns? If so, that's what it is.

No, Aristocrat doesn't have thorns. The variety Cleveland and others have thorns, buy I'm wondering if perhaps this was originally a Bradford that died out and the the rootstock took over. This tree doesn't really have a good form, so it may not be one of the cultivars, but is actually the original species Pyrus calleryana.

What happens when the rootstock takes over? What does that mean? I read about species Pyrus calleryana...seems that some do have thorns. I wonder how I can find out about these trees. I think I'm going to cut a lot of the bottom limbs off so that they are really high & my husband doesn't get mauled by it when he mows, lol.
