call your local county ext office. Sometimes they'll come and move the bees. Are there any bee keepers in your area? The last I heard the killer bees have not made it that far north.

Most of the bees which nest in the ground in your area are yellow jackets or hornets, both are considered pests, and meaner then Hades when they are bothered. Unless you happen to have a very desirable spot, they do not come back to the same location each year. If they do I would suggest hitting the nest up at night time (mark the spot during the day so you can find it) with product made especially for killing bees such as Shoo Fly or Black Flag hornet and wasp killer. These products usually drop the critters in their tracks, and reduce the chance of the applicator getting stung.

Normally they won't make a hole that large, but that does not mean that they would not utilize something that they found which was already there. Bumbles are pretty mellow bees, They actually let you pet them if you move slowly enough, my kids think I am nuts when I do this
