This is growing in our woods among all the other overgrown weeds and such. It looks like it might be a tree?

We are going to thin out the invasive stuff from the woods closest to our house. Anyone know if this is a keeper or not?

Thanks,
Joanne

Thanks Joclyn! Glad I didn't rip it out, although we have more than enough trees already. I'll have to be picky about which ones are allowed to stay.

I've heard of box elder trees but don't recall ever seeing one before. They are very cool looking! If I didn't already have WAY too many trees, I would put this on my "have to plant" list.

I love that tree..
The blossoms on that tree is so pretty...
A buttery lemon like color for the petals and a bright vivid, but not alot there, things like in the middle..
It's just so different..
Especially, I think, up here in the north for a tree..
It's one of my top favorits...

They do get tall..

And the leaves are alot of fun to collect, they are certainly not your average leaves, and they get quite a good size too...

From the links Jocyln gave, they are fast growers. It's odd that I haven't noticed any other tulip trees in our woods. Then again, ever since my bout of poison ivy I've been stearing clear of the denser parts. I'll have to keep my eye out.

[wavey] alex!! where in philly are you?? and how tall are the trees that are near you? they can get as tall as 200 ft...

the tulip trees are really different! from what i know about them, you could have a ton more waiting to grow in your woods, joanne...the seeds spread very far from the tree and can lay dormant for up to 7 years, i think it is.

My all time favorite tree right there. I had 2 huge ones on each side of my drive way on the first house I built. We (I) put bright yellow sideing on the house just so it matched the trees. lol - I say we but hubby hated it. Bright yellow house with pretty flowering trees out side and white cutesie trim and shutters with hearts cut out of them. HE said it was soo embrassing to tell people where he lived, they would say oh yeah the doll house looking place. lol

Hmmm, I might have to dig one or two of the babies up and put them in a more prominent place. I did find a tiny sapling that looks like it just started this spring. Do the leaves change as it gets older? I have quite a few trees that have funky leaves but not quite like these. I wonder if it's the same tree? I'll try and get a picture and post later this afternoon.

Never mind, I just googled it and found out they are Sassafras trees. We seem to have an odd assortment around here, lol.

I love the sweet scents wafting in the breeze. I stop to admire the vibrant colors of all living things. And people think me odd. Then ODD I am!!!
