Okay, it's probably something really simple...it sort of reminds me of a spider plant sort of....but the bottom of the long leaves are sort of bound together at the bottem growing up and fanning out...
My neighbor gave it to me when she split her plant up, she told me it's an orchid and that hers put off one flower last year.....I can't find anything in my houseplant book that looks like it.....maybe I'm missing it....
What the heck is it??? Oh and there is some kind of spider plant looking sort of baby thing coming off one of the long leaves.....

hi loz and please, forgive my two cents worth , but i think that it more closely resembles my neomarica gracilis ("walking iris"/"apostle plant") than it does my cymbidiums.
and your description of the new plantlets out at the leaf ends corroborates.

Eitehr way--I would like to know and wouldn't mind taking any babies off your hands. Looks like they are potted in regular potting soil?? Maybe mixed with peat moss?? Bonnie

Bonnie--I'd love to share but my moms a gardener too and I'd have to give her the baby or she'd probably disown me...LOL I'll keep you in mind though if it ever has more babies...
Zuzu, you know I think you might be right...it's hard to tell because all of the pictures of it I've looked at pretty much just show the flower not the foliage...but the description sounds spot on.

yeah, loz, i know what you mean, they just concentrate on pix of the flowers, which are really pretty, and each flower lasts only one day. but, for what it's worth, i have several big pots full of it, and they look exactly like yours. and, i have lots of little plantlets that i just removed from mine this weekend, they are super-easy to start, just plonk them into some moist medium, and you're good to go bonnie, if you'd like to have some, i'd be pleased to send you some, just p.m. me with your addy. and loz, if you'd like some more for your mom . . . ditto

Zuzu, are these a very common houseplant do you know????
And now you mention it I do recall(from the scary depths of my brain) my neighbor saying that her flower only lasted a day.....It's grown so well since she gave me a small division.
Thank you for your generous offer --my mom has a jungle of houseplants like I do though and I don't know where either of us would put more plants....LOL My husband claims that he feels like he's in a jungle.....

loz, they are a tropical perennial iris. in south florida, they are used as a landscape plant. you'll see more blooms if you can provide plenty of sun starting in the spring. i'm in a zone 8 climate, so i winter them in the house or greenhouse, but they spend summers out in the sunshine. mine flowers white with a purple center, but papito p.m.'d me links with some different varieties. cheers, papito!!
and, i can relate to the over-abundance of plants, we practically need a guide and a machete to get around inside the house in the wintertime .
