Member # 9000 posted                       Ok...bear with me- I have never even SEEN a compost bin up close in person, so...I know just enough to be dangerous! That been said- I am starting a compost bin/pile...It is under construction, anyway. My question is: 1. are grass clippings only considered greens if they ARE green? 2. How deep does a "pile" have to be in order to compost? 3. I have read several things about how long it will take to "heat up". What is a good average? Sorry for so many ?s, but...I have wanted to do this for a while and am very excited and am getting antsy trying to find out via google or research! Member # 3641 posted                       Grass clippings are green when fresh. If they're aged they're more of a brown. A pile should be a minimum of a cubic yard in order to get sufficiently hot.
