Well I know that some of us are starting to think about gardening again, even in the middle of winter. I am one of them.
I want to start a few wonder egg seeds.
I am putting together a greenhouse of sorts with a mason jar and 3 peat pots. Planning on covering it with plastic wrap and starting 2 seeds in each peat pot.
My plan is to keep it here on my desk until the seeds sprout and then I am not sure where they will go. With any luck, by the time I have to think about moving them, I will have an indoor seed starting greenhouse going.

Can you believe that all the eggs on my plants are still yellow/orange and have not turn brown or shriveled yet? I don't want to take the seeds yet, because I'm not sure they are ready, but I've also not seen the plant go this long either. There are only a few green leaves left on them - very odd. I guess if they don't turn brown by spring I'll take the seeds then.

That is a long time for the plant to stay going. As long as it does not stink, I'd keep it as well. I really hope mine do well. I was following a bit when everyone was growing them last year and saw the varied success. So I only used about 1/3 of the seeds I have and can try more later.

Will let you know. I was going through my seeds and I have all kind of stuff I did not remember. Hope I can find room for it all.

Update: Was just looking at the wonder egg peat pots. I see a small root coming out of the bottom of one of the peat pots. I cannot see anything out of the top yet, but I am sure it is a matter of time now.

It did seem to take forever for mine to germinate last spring. Hope you're getting a good head start on this!

I hope so too Lynne. I did save half my seeds in case these do not work. I am planning on starting them in a couple of weeks so they are offset by a few weeks.

My four plants all died... Too cold in my back room for them...
They were alot of fun..but did take forever to "get going"....... I told you, I had planted several seeds, and out of the four plants that I got, all were planted at the same exact time... Just all sprouted in four different intervals..
So, don't give up on the sprouting process.. and give up and throw them out, they may just suprise you....

That is a long time. I will be sure and give them plenty of time. I was just really excited to see a root. I planted these 6 seeds in 3 peat pots on December 28th.

wow Weezie - what a difference in all the pots!
My one pot that I had added new seeds to last summer is hanging in there. Still has an assorment of colored eggs in it, and a few green leaves on the newer plants, but not much. I'll see if I can get a picture when I go down to make dinner.

Ok - just took this picture. This pot is in one of the coldest rooms in the house - about 60 degrees.
Weezie - notice the gourds drying next to it? How are yours doing?

My past experience with this plant, was that the eggs turned brown, hard, and wrinkly, and then that was time to harvest the seeds. I've never had the "eggs" stay round and in bright color for so long - it's very strange! I think I'll let them go another month or so before removing them.
Triss - this was my first experience with growing birdhouse gourds. After the vine grew to the second story of our house, I ended up with about 5 smallish gourds. Two of them rotted pretty quickly, the other 3 are still drying. I had hoped to make birdhouses out of them, but I don't think they are big enough?
Oui - we have had discussions on whether they are edible here on the forums last summer. I had read that they were not, others feel that they are. For safety's sake, I've decided not to try.

Obviously you have the perfect place for that plant Lynne for it to be doing so well for so long.
Your gourd looked like an ok size for a birdhouse. Did you ahve to poke holes in them to speed the drying? Or just let them sit? How long do they take to dry?
I have Egg Gourd seeds. Have to look those up today and see what they do.

Triss - I didn't poke any holes in the gourds - just left them in this room by the window which also has a baseboard heater underneath. I'm not sure how rotten the inside will be when I finally open one. If all looks good inside, would you like some of the seeds? They germinated extrememly quickly - I think a day or so if I'm not mistaken!
I'm not familiar with Egg Gourds - have you found anything out about them yet?

I have not even looked. Will do that today. I'd love some seeds. I don't have any idea where I could plant them to get them to climb but a challenge is always a good thing!

Apparently this is what they look like when they are all grown up.
One of the pics I saw of them growing were on a smallish trellis.

I forgot to mention, that I started the seeds indoors in the end of March - probably too early as they were climbing all over the shelf! They do need room to run, but I did not mind them growing up the evergreen tree that is outside the kids' windows. I think I brought them in late fall, and they have been drying since. It's probably time to open one and see!
I googled images of your egg gourd - looks very cute and they showed ornaments made from them!

Yep, they look like a lot of fun. The sites I saw said that the gourd is ready if you can hear the seeds rattling inside.
