How big are the new shoots? In my experience, you want to wait until they're at least a few feet tall so that they will have developed roots of their own. Take a shovel and go straight down in between the old and new shoots, but right next to the old shoot to keep as many of the new shoots' roots as possible. Shouldn't be too difficult. Barb

I really did NOT pay all that close at the roots area when I cut mine.I had a neighbor let me have plants off some property he has 4 sale out here.I've took about half the side shots& I would guess& I don't think any were shorter than a foot.I took 3 the 1st year and more this year.The ones I took 1st have not set off any side shoots,but I used an axe& a shovel.Mines a basjoo& I don't know if other cultivers are different.I know some shoot off more pups than others& that they recomend that the pups have a start of their own roots.BUT they don't have 2 have roots to sprout.I had a portion that I tossed against shed cause it had no roots.& a month or so latter it started growing.I'd guess grown from tissue?I just dug a hole& dropped it in.it really needs a sunnier spot.
So tell me more about your plant& grow condtions.are they pot grown?inground?I use to watch Alan titmarch on our BBC.They would add some pea gravel to their inground mix.I imagine for drainage& watch the winds.high winds will shred your leaves.they'll still live,but the leaves look tattered& will yellow sooner than not shredded.and they like fertilzed.

To throw in my 2 cents about bananas, anytime we had a tree fall over and die, a couple new ones would grow out of the corpse. They were like a weed that could not be killed by anything but cold weather, so whatever your final solution, it shouldn't be too hard to grow some nice bananas.
