I opened my seed starting mix that I bought recently and found fire ants in there. I was planning to use it for seeds to be started indoors.

What should I do?

-Plant anyway?

-Use some home ant control spray on the surface of the potting mix? would this harm my seeds/seedlings?

-Get another bag?

Please reply ASAP because I have some seeds being soaked in the warm water that need to be planted soon.

These may not be fire ants but they are red.

I would take the mix back to where you bought it and make them replace it! Seed starting medium is supposed to be sterile... not infested with ants!
(Check the new bag before you leave the store...)

I can't return it because I bought it more than a month ago. I bought another one for the time being. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of the ants though?

Mike...was the bag sitting on the ground? The ants may have tried to nest in it, I doubt they were attracted to anything in the soil. I'd dump the bag into a trashcan or other container, and the ants will probably leave.

what ever you do, don't use it! you will get infested with the ants.
