I was talking with my daughter last night and she was telling me about her kalanchoe - the plant that was so masterly identified in the Mystery Plant forum.
A few weeks ago she decided to cut it back to within a few inches of the soil - in her own words, "It didn't even look like what it was supposed to!" Some cutting she planted in soil, and some she set in water to root.
For a while she was sure she had killed the plant, then suddenly *everything* started growing! The cuttings in water are rooting nicely, the potted cuttings are showing new growth, and mama plant now has 3 new leaves. It now looks like she'll end up with a whole family of healthy kalanchoes rather than just 1 sickly plant.
Thanks to every one here!

She doesn't want to get any more plants right now - their appartment isn't very sunny and they're shopping for a house, and hoping to move this summer. I promised her a bunch of cuttings from my plants when I go over to help them settle in - I'm in Quebec and they're in Alberta - and I'll probably buy a few things for her when I'm there.
She's also eager to start a vegetable garden, probably next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see her posting here, asking for advice!
All in all you're right, she's hooked, green-thumbed and happy!

Canadian CrabGrass, Even though she's in an apartment, she can do containers for some things. Lettuce, radishes, if she just wants to start out little, Get a wooden barrel and she can do a zucchini plant, or a couple of tomato plants!!!
It's very easy to do, HONESTLY! Just right out side her door to go in the house. There's tons of posts around here on container gardening, just type in CONTAINER's GARDENING, or just containers, or pots or veggies in containers. They'll be some good reading!!!
