Has anyone grown these "gourds"? They say that you can eat them while they are young or wait til they get older and dry out and then peel the kin and you have biodegradble sponge that i ssupposed to be stronger than the plastic foam ones. I am going to ordert seeds and was wondering if I can grow them along a fence or are they too heavy and have to grow along the ground? Thanks in advance.

Hi Renee, My mother grew those when I was younger, From what I remember they were relatively easy to grow, like a squash plant!!
The only problem I remember was the time to peel the product. It was tough to peel... They didn't peel like a banana!!! Seemed tough to peel. Maybe we just didnt' let it age enough, leave on the vine long enough to ripen???? Dunno??
But I remember having alot of fun with them. I remember using them, all little rough???? But fun!!!
Maybe you'll have better luck in growing it, that produces an easier peeling sponge!!!

Renee, I have some seeds for these that I'm going to try this year too...they sound like a lot of fun! The person I got them from said they are great in stir-fry when young and easy to grow. She stakes hers up in sort of a tripod. She lives in Arizona, and says they are lots of fun to grow! We'll have to compare notes later!
