Well... you'll get a lot of different advice on that one. We have hard clay here in LA. What I did was get some compost and soil amender. Either will do you just fine. Usually it says mix half amender and have existing dirt. I did more like 3/4ths amender 1/4 dirt. It's working great for me! This puts some nutrients back into the soil and lightens it up so that the roots can grow nice and healthy!

Kam,
I'm a home~made composter and that's about what I do for my dirt, compost and leaf mould *chopped up and decomposing leaves from my trees and left like in a bag to break down a bit..or just left in a pile by my bins and take that when I need it for the bins or for the top of the dirt.*

But if you're not able to do that, there's bagged dirt, some have top soil, compost, aged manure, I'm sure there's more types to according to states and area's...If starting a new bed, that's what I would put in, and mix it all up.

If it's for potted plants, there's alot of types as well, They'll say Potting Soil, Potting Soil Plus~This has polymere crystals *like in diaper's*
that holds water and that's used for like hanging baskets and cemetary urns that dry out very fast or not tended or watered often, it retains it.

What are you doing? Containers, raised beds, vegetables??? Just curious!!!

This is a brand new flowering bed. We are going to just but some colorful flowers out of the containers from the nursury.

We also are going to plant some fruit tress in the backyard.

Kam,
Annuals?! i love annuals! i got a thing for dead-heading [Big Grin] i just cant help it [Big Grin] i just found a FULL zip lock bag of my marigolds in the cubard, moisture got in there & now the poor seeds are trying to grow in the bag! gotta get them in the ground a,s,a,p!.....you can just buy a bag like weezie says [if theres a horse stable near by, they usealy give horse manure away! free, free, free [thumb] ] as for the fruit trees, i think the best time to transplant them is in the spring,or late fall, but i do know that they need so many leaves per fruit, the leaves are what makes the fruit ripen, so when there young youll have to pick off some of the fruit, so the others will ripen.
good luck & keep us posted on what your doing [flower]
