Does anyone know a way to get the ants out of my garden. They have developed colonies in the root system of some of my tomato plants. I have used grits, cream of wheat, even boric acid. It always seems to rain when I don't want it to. Help.

just a thought i;m throwing out there - not sure if it will work or not. i read somewhere that ants don't like mint. so maybe you could chop up some fresh mint (if you don't have any growing they usually have some in the produce dept of the grocery store) and sprinkle it around the plants? just an idea.....

So, did the mint work? I've got ants in a few of my potted plants, so I am curious.

Would Ant colonies at the bas of trees kill the tree? I have a bunch or Lilac bushes that are having big problems they've been scraggly for years. There are large ant colonies in the area and at the base of some of them...
Maybe thats why th e trees are dying

In my experence FRESH mint will repell ants but looses its effect upon drying. As to ants damaging trees I would say no, they are just annoying as all get out. There is one very significant exception to this there are a group off ants called carpenter ants. These guys can cause a lot of damage, they do not eat the wood but chew the wood to create galleries for the young. Given your description i would think this unlikely. Hope this of some assistance, good luck.
