Hi. Trying to get rid of foxtails seems to be a never ending problem for most gardeners I would think. Still, maybe someone has a good solution that I could try and some feed back on methods I've tried.
The real issue - is not so much my land as my mother's (across the street from me - and guess who gets the "get rid of them" order). Not to say that I don't have them too.
Mother would not listen to me, and has had her land scraped a couple of times - each time the problem gets worse. So that is not the answer. She's also tried Roundup (and for those who are of a mind - I agree poison is not the best answer at times - especially when covering a good acre of ground and we live atop our water supply - i.e. well water). The Roundup actually yielded a greater crop the following year
I'm toying now with "pull" vs "cut" and hope for the best from "undisturbed ground" (other than cleaning up the debris).
Unlike in the city, a couple of acres is a lot more to take care of (no duh, I know). In Cerritos - keeping weeds under control was no problem.
So - - does anyone have any ideas - - anyone know if better to simply cut them down or pull them out?

I looked them up in my Rodale's Successful Organic Garden series book on controlling weeds and all they say is to pull, cut, or mow larger plants to the ground before they set seed; repeat every week or two until plants stop resprouting.
They also say that foxtails are an indication of fertile soil. Maybe you could convince someone to rent the acre to use as a market garden.
