HELP! Ther are black spots on the leaves of my maple trees. They appeared last year and killed the leaves before the beginning of september. I looked up tar spot and found out the the fungus winters on the dead leaves so i got rid of them. The spots are back and I afraid it will kill my trees. Any ideas on how to kill this stuff? I really don't want to loose these trees.

You were right to remove all the leaves, but if it has come back this year you might have to spray with a product that contains Mancozeb or Triadimefon. They are both known to assist in the control of Tar Spot. The only problem is that you have to spray BEFORE the leaves come out. It wont effect it at all after the leaves have arrived. Remove the leaves again this year and then spray the tree(maybe the ground surrounding them too). When the new growth starts next year it should be disease free. And dont worry, tar spot will not severely effect the health of the tree(it just looks awful, dont it ) Hope this helps

Thanks, I guess I'll have to wait it out. Yes it looks horrible. I mean when all the other trees have turning leaves mine are bare sticks. It sucks

In addition to what Karen (Gardenmom) said, Tar Spot, a disease caused by leaf-invading fungus, thrives on moist environment. Reduce moisture in and around the tree. Trim the canopy [by a professional tree trimmer (arborist)] to allow more air circulation. Rake all the fallen leaves and dispose off. Next spring, apply Bordeau mixture (following label instructions).
