Hi! Does anyone know how to make acid food for a azalea? I got one for Easter and just don't have the extra money right now to spend on getting anything? Hope someone can help me out here? Remember keep those hands dirty! and may God bless.

i know mulching them with pine straw provides the acid, and if i am not mistaken, so does coffee grounds.

If you have oak trees plant your azalea there. The leaves make the soil perfect for them.

One of my favorite nurseries out here sells "Soil Sulpher" and it is very inexpensive ($2 - $3) for a bag that will last a very long time. I read up on it before I bought it - this is the first year I'm using it. The info I have says that desert land tends to be higher in alkaline (though I've had no problems with roses which prefer acidic soil). Anyway - the "soil sulpher" is supposed to lower the ph of the soil and a little goes a long ways.

I know you stated you can't afford much right now - but you might check and see if you can get it where you're at and at what price.

I got azalea food on clearance at the end of last year for 2 something....well I have 2 azaleas...one that didn't do well at all, and to be honest with you I thought it was dead, but something in my head said don't pull it out....so a few weeks back I put some food on it and I just checked it yesterday and there are buds appearing on it!!!!! I'm so happy [grin] ---it honestly appeared to be dead!

I am having great success this year with the coffee grounds on the azaleas and the roses! [thumb]

In fact I ran a little experiment and excluded the grounds on one azalea and half the roses.....the plants with grounds are blooming away beautifully and the non~coffee ground plants are not producing half as many blooms. [thumb]

Starbucks has a program where they give out their coffee grounds free for composting/mulching. According to their website, you can just go to any Starbucks and request grounds.

I just wanted to tell you all that we have had an azalea in our garden that has just trudged along for the last 3 years. We almost took it out. I tried the coffee grounds and you wouldn't believe how beautiful it is now. Unbelieveable!!

Thanks for the tip....one more reason to pop by here once in a while. Good website people. [thumb]

Hi all, I've put all my coffee grounds on my vegetable garden for 35 years and I have the lightest, fluffiest soil from old hard packed hay field soil.
Now my Azaleas & roses will get them. Thanks for the information.
