I have one and was just curious.

Our neighborhood garden club wants to get our whole area designated as one.

I live in the woods and got pretty much of one naturally started already and if you kinda look my wole yard over got more elements.I get the wildlife feration newsletter and send off for the kit that has a packet of info on makeing one.I also folled the story of a lady in houston that made one in her front yard and guess is a well off neighborhood and they went up against her and had her in court last court hearing she was set yet another deadline to clean it up.it is registered also.seems she lost her job and is behind on morgage& not in good health at this time either.
I use to live Indpls 4 yrs ago on west side.. so where you live?tell about your habitat.I get all kinds of birds some are not even in my tree book get a good bit of woodpeckers and have left the dead trees in place for them.but one will have to go as it will fall on my gardening shed it has lost its top in the past but is just trunk with a live vine growing on it.around our 2 acres its fenced but has youpon holly growing around most of it and other brush at the back of property is up against the thicket part of woods and rangeing 5-7 ft back from it is inpenaratable brush/trees pines whatever.i have a birdbath and 100 gal pond.alot of the small birds hang out in my cedars& anyother tree they see about.some chickadees make their nest in a trashcan in my gardening shed so now keepthose turned upsidedown in there and no more drying seeds in gardening shed....they think its a drive in for a free meal.got squirlls.rabbits..possum...snakes..get tons of butterflys and with doing a butterfly garden should have even more& some nice lil geko lizzys and a few rock ones hang out in yard & always make sure have 2-3 indoors for winter grubbing.they eat my buggies

Your woods sound great.

I live on the east side in an old historic neighborhood called Irvington. I am just a few minutes from downtown. Some people consider us innercity.

My yard is only about 3/4 of an acre, but our backyard is right up agaisnt a golfcourse. On one side is a creek. I have 2 brush piles.

Every year we have a turtle come up through the yard. It is a different turtle every year. We have had a few snakes. Two years ago in the fall we had a red fox.

We have seen pileated woodpeckers (my hubby did I have not been lucky enough to see it yet), downy woodpeckers, tufted titmouse, hummingbirds, and all the other common birds.

I have seen indigo buntings twice.

I have many woodland wildflowers.

The animals seem to think I have one. When we built our house we decided to build it in the middle of a hay field, which meant endless hours of planting trees and bushes. The neighbours teased me that I'd soon have a forest, well First thing you know there are bears, deer, foxes, pheasants, partridge and everything else playing in my yard but never in the neighbours.Last year I was barbequing and the fox just strolled to the end of my property and sat down to wait to see if he'd be fed. He has been hanging around since he was a baby. This year I will buy a cap gun to scare them off, I definately don't want the bears back.

I have several areas, much to the dismay of my husband, but hey, I gotta get him mad at me once in a while or marriage just wouldn't any fun [Big Grin] [Wink]
I had a large veggie garden from all the previous owners and when my mother and I decided to do raised beds, the first year I just used the middle portion of the bed and the following years, I've let it go fallow, and when I did that, I found several raspberry spikes growing...
And I have wild raspberries around, but these were the black~raspberries, so I am going to keep those, I love those plants, and not many places sell them...I have a great big long pile at the very bad end of the yard, and nothing is completely landscaped, just beds are put in the middle of nature...I will never be a manicured gardener..... He likes crisp and clean edges, ha, the day he gets crisp and clean from me is, I don't know the day I bump my head, I don't know,
I've never been the crisp and cleaned edged type person....
But I also whole heartidly believe in leaving an area for the critters, you want them there, you need them there, and they won't come if you don't have room for them in the garden.....I just leave alot more area than my husband would like.......
We'll get along just fine with it, as I can keep him INDOORS!!! [Big Grin] [Razz] [Roll Eyes]

We live on 7 acres. We don't have any water on the land but all kinds of animals come around. We have deer, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, snakes, and mice. I don't like mice. My daughter lives on 77 acres, and has even seen a bobcat in her driveway. She'll see 20 deer at a time. I've only seen 4 or 5 out here at one time. My daughter has hundreds of rabbits. They run back and forth across her driveway. It's cute.

I know which golf course your talking about but its name eludes me.He played at Thatcher alot as was closest one to house& played deer run deer creek something with deer in it.was one in greenwood we played once was a 18 hole but is set up as 2 9 holes one was real treey the other more open. The only time I ever played 18 holes and we walked it.played pleasunt run as was by his house.the brothers would meet at moms and off they'd go.I only went with them once a year.I was at work 60 hours plus a week most times if not 80.never got to play the brickyard right down from where we lived was a 4 month wait list and was $80 and YOU HAD TO HAVE LUNCH & A DRINK on topof that.We did drive into the track one year for the race...and of course the golf clubs were in truck....so of course we each hit a ball off the TEE till a track security guy came told us was not allowed..but hey 4 out of 7 of us got to hit one& I was the 3rd one.

back to backyard habitats...I have a PDF file of plants used in a backyard habitat.it even lists states the plants are used in BYH.
I have no idea how to post a PDF

A PDF is the type of file that Adobe Acrobat opens. It can be any type of document, usually the person who created scanned it in using a full version of Acrobat, but most people just have the free version of Acrobat Reader. When you go to a website and you have to download or just open a form (I'm thinking school stuff here, transcript requests, scholarship info, etc.) that is usually a PDF. [wayey]
