I've decided to grow mainly herbs for the moment and just stick with the esential veggies, corn, lemon cucumber, baby carrots, broccoli, peas, peppers, lettuce and tomatoes. Geeze.. when I write it out it seems like alot still. Oh well here's a list of the herbs I'm ordering.
Ground ivy
Ginger
Codonopsis
Compass plant
Chinese jobs tears
pineapple sage
Bai zhu
Fo-ti
zhi-mu
Yellow yarrow
Visnaga
Anise-hissop
Lemon balm
Chamomile
Menthol mint
Bergamont
So that's the list, I hope I don't over run myself! I don't know alot about all of them almost nothing about some of them other then what they're good for and sowing instructions. If their's anything You don't recomend or better variaties for me tell me quick cause I've got to order soon! Oh ya I live in zone 3 aprox. within one digget but I'm building a green house to mimic up to zone 5-6 so I think I'll be ok. Jilly I still haven't gotten around to reading much on that site of that doctor, I probably should but I've been buisy. I think I'm getting to much oxygen [perplexed] . Anyways thanks for anyone who takes the time to look at my list [grin] .

Apples,
Did they give you a picture of the "Ground ivy"?

Keep all your mints contained, they like to go run with their roots. And can look a bit scraggely towards end of summer.............

I love Lemon Balm,
but Lemon Thyme is more my favorite!!!

I know the white Yarrow can become invasive.

Are you container gardening all of these???

Hey weezie,
I'm have to read up on them a little more first. I've been finding alot more places to garden [grin] so I'm not limited to containers anymore but still somewhat prefer.
I'm putting up a green house to!!! My dad wanted to start a flower shop one day so when I told him how I was thinking of putting one up durring winter time to take down... HE WENT AND BOUGHT ONE! I'm so incredably lucky to have my parents, they're helping me so much while I figgure things out and plan out how I'm going to go back to school.
I'll list the places and their conditions that I have.
Mind you that I'm listed as zone 2a-4 because it veries so much I guess, so anything that can't handle that is in the green house for winter(will have to be contanerized at least for the winter).
...Well I've thought about it and I have all conditions including many different micro-climats so I guess the only thing that realy matters is if they can survive my winters even then if they can stand not having full sun for half the day most should be fine in some of the micro-climats.

Are their any you wouldn't suggest growing in a container?
The veggies I'm going to experiment with both containers and out doors. I think the corn will stay in the ground but it is dwarfed stocks!?!
I think I might try it for fun. By the way I'm ordering from richters and the ground ivy did have a pic. I was going post it on here but I can't for some reason so I'll link it.
ground ivy

Do I have any other mints then menthol and pinapple sage? I know it's quite a large family but I don't know many of them.
Anyways thank you weezie for your responce [Smile]

Quite a bit of herbs there. I am not familiar with some of the herbs in your list like Bai-Zhu, Fo-Ti, Zhi-Mu, do you have the botanical names for them?

Here's a link to The herb Society of America.

Apples,
Just a quick reponse on the ground ivy....
Have you ordered it already???
You might want to check the ground in your area first for it before you buy it!!!
I have a GA~ZILLION of them here,
My brother hates it, (He has dry soil and it
doesn't pull out easy for him, I have lushious soil with compost and leaves) and I like it, it's my "weed of choice" actually here... because it does cover the soil quite prolifically, that I can let it go crazy, keep out the other weeds that have a deeper tap root, that I can't get out as easily!!! I pull it by then leave it on the perimeter of the area I just pulled it from so it can stay out there, and not creep in.....
It does root along the stem line, at EACH of the nodes, any where's it touches the dirt just so you know!!!!

If you keep it in a container, it will hang over the edges!!!

I have never eaten it, IT'S LISTED AS A HERB??????

Thanks papido.
See, what'd I tell you! I start talking about your your classy timing in another post ad you show up in one of mine!
I'll get those botanicall names on here soon. Fo-ti is a neat sounding one! I probably got it soley for the story behind it but I'm young and I can aford to experiment.
FO-TI

Polygonum multiflorum

Perennial Uses: medicinal
(He-shou-wu) Legendary Oriental "Elixir of Life" said to possess fantastic rejuvenating properties. Some believe fo-ti was used by a certain Professor Li Chung Yun who lived to the ripe old age of 256! So the story goes, early in life Li developed the penchant for taking a daily concoction containing the "elixir of life." He is said to have outlived 23 wives, and left behind 11 generations of descendents when he died in 1933. Virility- and longevity-promoting prowess aside, fo-ti is one of the most widely used tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Roots are used to restore blood, liver and kidneys, and is prescribed for conditions as varied as vertigo, insomnia, lumbago, and constipation. Recent evidence shows it to be effective against high blood pressure and hardening of the veins and arteries. Climber.

BAI ZHU

Atractylodes macrocephala

Perennial Uses: medicinal
Chinese medicinal herb noted for strengthening the spleen and building chi energy. Rhizomes are used to treat diarrhea, fatigue, lack of appetite and vomiting related to deficiencies of spleen or stomach. Animal studies suggest it strengthens endurance. Also used as a diuretic and to reduce excessive sweating. Purple flowers; grows up to 60cm/2 ft high

ZHI MU

Anemarrhena asphodeloides

Perennial Uses: medicinal
Chinese medicinal herb that looks and grows like a tall grass but isn't. It spreads by underground rhizome like grasses, but unlike grasses it has fragrant yellow-white or light purple flowers that open in the evening in late summer and autumn. Used in China for 2000 years. The rhizomes are noted for their antidiabetic and antibacterial properties, and are used for pneumonia, bronchitis, high fever, irritability and insomnia.

Ah... I got bord so I just pasted them on here.
As you can see they're all old chinese remidies [dunno] I just thought I'd give them a shot.

I know I might over run myself but what I'll have right away are going to come as plants. Anise-Hyssop, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Menthol mint and Bergamot are coming as seeds from there herbal tea garden. The ones I don't get planted this year I figgure will be good till next spring.
I'm starting to care for parts of my landscape and I'm going to try to put everything that has similar needs in relitive spots so I don't get to confused. Alot I figure can be incorperated into my bonsai collection benches, and the garden I'm starting in the front yard so I hope I'll/they'll be ok with me!
I read about all of their uses and just picked out all the ones that seemed good for me to see if any one had any thoughts on them.
Thanks papito again I'll check out that link you gave me [Wink] .

Ok, I'm doing to much at once right now.
I didn't look up to see your first post weezie.
I have seen something similar but never with flowers and it grows no where near light. It usualy turns purple after or at least during the winter [dunno] I was kind of thinking the same thing(is that what that is and you eat it?) but I realy can't be shure. See this is the kind of stuff I was looking for. When and how long do they flower for?
Thanks weezie. [Wink]
