ok, questions... Back at the beginning of the summer, I bought an asiatic lily that was in bloom. Was real pretty. It died back during the heat of the summer. I didn't do anything, let it get water the same way all my plant did, the rain way. But now, winter is coming, how do I check to see if it is viable and how do I overwinter it so I will Have it next year?

Jiffy, It'll do all the work itself and it'll come up mid~spring!! Just throw some nice stuff on top of where you planted it, compost is all I put on it!!!! And it'll do pretty much all the work. They are really a very reliable plant. Plant them, cover with compost in spring, I cut off the tiny ends where the flower was so it doesn't take energy away from the bulb.
And watch it grow. Now, there may be some thing else you can sprinkle over the top of the dirt, like a bone meal, or blood meal, ?????? I can't remember and that's suppose to help the roots. Someone might be able to give you that info!!
What color was it????? I absolutely love those. They are so regal. I do put tomato cages on mine, only because of where my garden is, and the lite they need. But they are multipling like crazy. Weezie

I didn't plant mine because of the construction I knew would be going on in front of the house wehre I want to put it!... So, I sat the pot it came in in a hanging basket that was suspended from a shepherd's hook. I think it said it needed full sun, so I had it where it got morning and noon sun. When we started construction on my porch, I moved it to a shady spot, but it had already died back.

Oh, and it was pink because when I bought it, I was spending some one on one time with our exchange student at the time, and pink is her favorite color... which reminds me, I gotta start shopping for her birthday!

Jiffy, If it were mine, I'd plant it now, to get the roots established. but you have a different zone than me, Do things grow for you in the winter months?? (In the ground???) Being in your zone, MY GUESS WOULD BE, to keep it in the basement or garage and in spring plant it, for in your nicer climate than mine, it might emerge too soon!!!!!
Dig the hole, amend the soil now, let it work down and render in and attrack some worms, then come spring take it out of the pot, put it in the soil and throw a load of compost over the top. They're pretty hardy...
It's hard to say, usually plants like that, just don't up and die, they go dormat. And mother nature has a wonderful way of protecting herself and with drought by having some plants go dormant and going to sleep until next spring time.
I'm not sure about the looks of the plant, I would imagine you could pull it out of the dirt it's in now, compare it to some other bulbs you see in the store???????? That's probly what I'd do???
