I am no expert, but have I have successfully grown marigolds for several years. This year however, my plants look nice and bushy, but the blooms are small. Some plants are very full with foliage, and full of tiny buds, and NO blooms. I fertilize once a week with the suggested dilution of MiracleGro (as I've done in the past) and deadhead them regularly. One thing of note is that this summer has been wetter then most. Would too water cause this problem? If not, what would cause this?

Hello JersyPaul, Welcome aboard the Garden Helper's Forum!! We have a great bunch of gardener's here. And lot's of great info.................. And they're alot of fun to chat with.
My first thought when you posted is, Yes, I think the rain has alot to do with it, the poor things are busy trying to grow and they feel like they're drowning. And then the molds or fungus' start. And probably cooler nights to boot! So they are a bit stressed!!!
I got some questions for you. #1. What's the 3 no. on your Miracle Grow? When the first no. is the highest, you get alot of green, bushy growth. If you use one that has a high middle no. you're looking at the flower and root production. My personal fav is Schultz Bloom Plus 10~60~10. That really promotes blooms. #2. Did you use the same type soil to plant them in?? This could be a factor????? #3. Do you have them in the same place you've always grown them? Same light, etc.
Hope this'll help narrow it down a bit more for you?? Happy Gardening!! Weezie I have relatives in Edgewater, close? or no cigar???

Thank for the advice Weezie. I checked and the MiracleGro is 15-30-15. I have used this in the past and the marigolds are planted in the same soil and location as past years. They actually did better last year during a severe drought, so I think this is the answer. Too much moisture.
Next year I'll try the Schultz. Not sure were Edgewater is. I'm in southern NJ, just outside of Philadelphia.

JerseyPaul, The Miracle Grow has the right no. That one's fine!!! I'm thinking the rain is just too much for some plants. Some like a good dryin' out before they get watered again. Some of mine are waining, like the pelargoniums (geraniums) that I have, I use compost in my soil mix which helps hold water and with it raining so much, I don't think they like it either... I think where Edgewater is, must be way East of you, they live near thier daughter which she lives in Conn. ????? I don't know directions, soo I could be way off!) Anyhow, good luck with your marigolds (by the way which are very easy to start from seeds, just pinch off the old partially dried seed pods, lay them on the dirt, and you'll get a few to sprout right there!!)
Happy Gardening!! Weezie
