Don't know if this ? fits here but will try anyway!
Thought! I like to recycle whenever possible and my daughter has a catrillion bottles of left over fingernail polish that are pretty thick...ugly now or whatever!
????? My question is IF I painted the bottom portion of a trellis (that goes in the ground) would that increase the longevity of the wood (from rotting)?????? or would the chemical in the fingernail polish get into the soil and kill the plant???

OOOHHH, that is a good idea! I don't know how it will work, but I have used old nail polish for marking tool handles. I hope someone has the answer so I can use it too!!

I'm not a fingernail polish expert, but I believe that most of these are enamels and lacquers and as such would help to preserve the wood without causing damage to the plants. I'd recommend thinning the fn polish down (is there such a thing as fn polish thinner??? ) prior to painting it on to help it penetrate the wood better... Do NOT paint the bottom of the post, and be sure to have a few stones in the bottom of the hole to allow the water to drain away. Are you going to mix the bottles together to create one ugly color, or create a rainbow of different colors?

Thanx all for your responses. Papito is right....keep in mind it is a hazardous waste!
I believe you can mix (but don't quote me) a couple drops of nail polish remover with n.polish to thin.
Bill WHY not paint the bottoms.?
I kinda think the candy cane look would be nice Bill. Not into the rainbow sort of deal just the candycane! And mixing being ugly......Well ugly is in the eye of the beholder!!!!!
The only one that is going to see it is the gophers!!! Maybe they would take a bite and go to gopher !!!! Thanx everyone for your input!!!

Catlover, you are quite right, a few drops of nail polish remover will thin it down. Let us know how it worked, I have a few trellis' myself that are going to need some fixing up pretty soon.

Painting the bottom of the post would seal it up too tightly by creating a cup that would essentially collect all the moisture absorbed by the "above ground" wood. Leaving it unpainted (with stones below) will allow the wood to breathe and act in the same way as the drain holes in your pots.

when I cut stems on my roses i paint over the coat with nail polish to seal the ends and prevent canker......when i 1st got all my roses didn't know much about careing for them& had called the Tyler rose society and the gal i talked to on the phone had someone come to the house and that was what she told me to do with the tips.she said did not matter if clear or color.i used an ugly brownish red& is a few with pearly looking orange.its never hurt them
am courious about why not underground on wood or what not too
I painted a trellis that was wood long time ago(14 or more now ) was an oil based paint and was for wood.was at the ace hardware.it was green they had black/red/white/green
