Can anyone please tell me if a Tropical Bird of Paradise can be devided that has been in the ground for 50yrs.? It is huge and needs to be trimmed back, but I don't know if I can do it without harming it. I read the info on this web site, but it isn't explicit on the trimming part. Thanks, Claire borsndors@cox.net

I just looked up Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) in my Mynah Plant Book, and it says that you can divide them, but it's kinda hard because the roots are tough. You may have to use a hatchet or saw. I know that sounds severe, but try it on one of the outer edges as a test.

Question: What variety of Bird of Paradise (BoP) do you have?
Red, Cascalote, Desert, Mexican or the other popular BoP's S. reginae and S. nicolai?
No reason why the rhizomes of the BoP can not be divided. It is best done during late spring or early summer. Dig up and separate the rhizomes using a sharp knife. Dash the rhizome with rooting hormone before planting to hasten new roots.
As for trimming, trimming/prunning time depends on the Tropical BoP variety according to Linda Drew, Master Gardener, at Arid Gardener/ Arizona.Edu.
Red BoP?.......prune in November(late winter/early spring after danger of frost) Cascalote BoP?...prune n March Desert BoP?......prune in June and January Mexican BoP?.....prune in June
I have 2 10-year old BoP's (S. nicolai)in containers that both bloomed (white flowers) this past June. There are 4 "babies" (shoots) that are ready for transplanting next Spring.
