Is there anything, other than perhaps ivy, that will grow under a Magnolia tree in the South. Those roots are just so ugly.

My grandma's magnolia in birmingham, she had filled in between the roots with good topsoil, and planted i beleive they were violets....english violets maybe? They aren't there now, i remember them as a child.
Ansy shade loving ground cover should work..there are a lot to chose from.
