Butterfly bushes are very easy to grow. They prefer full sun and average moisture the first season, and usually drought tolerant once established. How much pruning you do depends on how large you want it to grow. I try to keep mine at about 3-4 ft. tall, but my friend has one over 10 feet tall. Pruning will also increase the amount of blooms. You should prune in late winter before new growth appears...they bloom on new growth. If your bush isn't very big and you want it to grow taller, only prune it back a little the first season. At the end of the summer if it's reached the desired height, you can prune a little more the next time. Some people prune them back to only 6 or so inches to the ground, but you don't want to do that just yet...let the root system grow bigger first.
