Painters had to trim the lower branches of a pair of beautiful twenty foot Holly Trees. So we are left with only the top branches and a lot of stubby leafless branches about four or five inches long sticking out down the trunk. How soon could we expect the tree to regain its lower foilage or should we remove the trees and start over. At this point they are a real eye-sore. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Holly is not an easy plant to establish. You can try pruning the entire tree to attempt to reshape it. I am not certain if there will be much new growth to the bottom of your trees since they were cut so close to the trunk. Check for new growth this spring. It should take a good 3 years of growth to fill in the spaces left by the painters.
