Hi garden experts: I planted some salad radishes a few weeks ago. They seem to grow well, except that many of them split from the bottom, some split from the top. Does any one know what caused this problem?
Thanks,
David

Dyan, A sudden increase in moisture causes many vegetable to swell and split the skin. You can see a good example of this with tomatoes that have been growing during a fairly dry summer. When fall rains come, the ripe and near ripe fruit split. Maintaining an even moisture level helps to prevent this. Mulch is excellent for this. Steady growth is the key to good radishes. Some varieties are more split resistant than others. I've had good luck with German Giant radishes. They hold well even when 2" across and don't get woody. The variety French Breakfast splits easily, at least in my garden. Rick
