ok folks... I have a cast iron plant in my office that I have had for 5 years. My problem is that it has sent out only 3 leaves in 4 years! This picture is not of mine, and I want mine to have more leaves like this one Bill, this isn't on your houseplant list or garden list. I can't find anything out about getting it to grow faster or to propage it! HELP!! mine only has 6 leaves total

Sure looks like a cousin of the peace lily. Will can probably help. He usually responds under the houseplant section first. Maybe you can post it there. Catlover

mom says its (to her)a mother n law plant...you can't kill or get rid of.shes still got hers& (i use to hide my ciggs in it when growing up)..hers is bout25 yrs old now& she did repot one yr.has in east faceing window, says if leaves are light green is not getting enough sun.she said is a few varieties out but all are slow growers, she claims can take one year for just one leaf to grow.they don't need fertilizer alot as are slow plants.she repotted hers cause it cracked its pot& was pot bound said was hardley any soil in when she potted up.from what I read.......they don't take lots of light and some say like pot bound & others don't,but some milkyway kind is fastest grower.think will beg Don for some of his, think can convince him pot is full

Hi, Jiffymouse! I found your plant! Its botanical name is "aspidistra elatior" from the liliaceae family. This book states to let the soil dry between soakings, average humidity is fine. It will grow in low to high light, but does best in medium light. It prefers average to cool temperatures. This book also states "do not fertilize". Repot only when you want the plant to put on new growth, with standard potting soil. These plants are propagated by division. Hope this helps! Happy gardening!

Sheri, THANKS! I am thinking that to get it to grow more, I could cut the rizomes apart with a sharp knife and then repot. I am going to repost this whole string (If I can figure out how) in houseplants and see what Will has to say also. Or maybe I will cheat and just get will to look over here! He has done that for me once in a while.

Aspidistras are very slow growers, which is why large ones tend to be rather expensive. Providing a lot of bright indirect light all day long and keeping them potbound will help promote growth.
