We've had a number of orchids which were blooming when we bought them. We read all the books on them, planted them in the proper medium (wood chips, I think) and water and fertilize them according to the directions; not one of them has ever bloomed again and we are talking four years here. Help. How can we get them to bloom?

It is not easy to get orchids to rebloom. Not only do you have to have the right potting medium, but you also have to be very knowledgeable about using fertilizer that varies with the potting medium and the time of year. Finally, having the right light intensity is critical to bud development.
I have written an article on basic orchid care that I will e-mail to you if you send me your email address. It will answer some of your questions, but you will have to do more research and experimentation to really get a handle on orchids. They do require a lot of patience and perserverance.
Have I discouraged you?!

We need to know which orchids they are before giving detailed advice. I'll bet they are phals and/or Dendrobiums. Both are treated differently. In general, fertilize with orchid food mixed at HA:F strength every other watering. Dens like a lot of sun, phals low to medium, no sun. Phals like to stay MOIST (not soggy) and Dens like to dry out totally before watering again.

I've got a few, a few Phals and a couple of Dendrobiums. I bought my first one last November. They can be very addictive for a lot of people.
Phals are a good beginners orchid.
There are quite a few really good orchid web sites out there. Here are just a few:

hey jambkie, dawn and i have been growing orchids for quite a few years. if your plants seem robust but are failing to bloom, our experience has been that you have a light issue. as tomr mentioned more information as to the name of the orchids in question would help. we winter almost 100 orchids in our home under banks of fluorescent lights and use many windows to our advantage, and have blooms all winter long. orchids are not rocket science but they do require specialized conditions. good growing skip & dawn
