I received a mini rose from the supermarket for valentine's day this year. I managed to keep it alive until the waether got warm enough to put it outside on my covered deck, where it remains today. Right now it seems happy, but I am wondering what to do with it for the winter? Do I leave it outside and let it go dormant? Or do I bring it inside for the winter?

Barleychown,
Now this is only what I've heard.
But the ones you get from the supermarket, etc. are not always that hardy, or they make it, but struggle.
I've heard, that if you have the mini's, to buy from a plant establishment (nursery) with a greater success!
Not saying it won't and hey, probly in your area and zone it would but mine, it wouldn't or it would struggle.

P.S. Always experiment?
Get another one, keep one out and one in and see how they do, gardening is all experimental, and that's how you learn. And what one can accomplish here, doesn't nessessarily work well there and vice versa....... :y<:

Barley, I remember something Will said about the mini roses and basically, if you can keep it like a regular rose, it does ok, but not if it is kept in the house with out enough light. But, hang around, Will checks this forum regularly, and I KNOW he has the answer!

Probly has alot to do with different zones.
More than likey, someone in my zone, has a harder time with them and someone in KINDER climates, probly would have luck with them out side.
I agree with Jiffy as they are not great house plants.
Don't they need some type of dormancy period too?

I bought 4 year before last& belive even got them round V day.well they did great all summer& decided to bring them indoors(no idea why,in mild climate)needless to say i killed all of them.which really surprised me at time cause had 78 rose bushes at the time and only lost 5 of those and that was cause my bassett hound chewed them(yes correct,,,thorns and all he chewed them, pulledout of ground,,,hollerd for him one day& here he comes running with golden showers hanging in his mouth....i [Mad] i kinda beat him with the bush, needless to say he does not chew my plants but does still make a point to search them out to pee on)
I'd make sure it is in non original pot and drains well and gets good light, they still like 6 hours daylight a day which mine was not getting cause was kinda crammed with 73 plants indoors& was in group on makeshift shelf under card table.it got south light but was maybe shaded under table so not light all day was maybe getting 3 hours of sun if that, but i was haveing a space issue, then added seed starting flats to my problem too, they kinda filled the daybed.

cuz is in Nj and she says she has some on front porch in planter, she says they are not indoor plants, but that they won't live in those plastic lil pots she said do to a gallon type planter and let it keep getting water for about 2 weeks but then to cut back to a cup a week and let go dormant.i guess will have to try another one as shes sending me one now.is a fragrant one and said i will need doll sicossrs to trim back

Howdy,
I'm in zone 9 and I've had mini roses do fine outside all year long, however they were in the ground. We do get frost but nothing too severe, upper 30s is the lowest we go. I just treated them like regular roses, trimmed them back in Jan. and they bloomed right back up in the spring.

Mini roses are not good indoor plants as they do need lots of light. At the San Diego fair there was a whole booth about minis, what to do and not do. The biggest don't was treat them like a regular houseplant. I'll see if they have a website.... [Smile]

Thanks, all! I plan on getting some of the 'nursery' type mini's for the garden next year, but was worried about the one I have now because it is from a supermarket. I have read several places that they are not nearly as hardy as the nursery roses.

Since it's already outside, will the slow change in the weather, and the fact that it's on a covered deck help it adjust to winter? [dunno]

Barley,
I'll bet with your zone, it should do fine.
Mine here is zone 5 and usually what kills any plant here is the January thaw, and the cold winds...

Barb *flower* said with a covering that one should be fine, but you don't really have
a harsh weather do you???
