I have a bonsai plant that doesn't seem to be doing to well. I water it about every 2 weeks by giving it a really good soaking but the branches are looking like they are all starting to turn brown. I had another type of bonsai plant that is now gone. I've been told they are very hard to take care of. We got a kitten and my husband wasn't watching her like he was suppose to and she was pruning both plants. Once she started it was all over for the one plant. The other just hasn't been the same since. Is there any hope for this poor plant?

Bonsai can be very difficult for several reasons. Trying to get the watering right is not always easy. Bonsai sellers always seem to have some nice watering routine like once per week. Howwever that doesn't take into account your home environment. For most bonsai, it is best to give it a good soaking as soon as the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch.
Light is another problem. Most of the species commonly used for bonsai need at least some direct sunlight each day.
Finally, the majority of bonsai that are sold are not tropical in origin. That means they struggle to stay alive in warm home temperatures during the winter when they are ordinarily outside in the cold. Always look for tropical or semi-tropical bonsai. That excludes most of the pretty evergreen miniature trees.

Most bonsai need to be watered every couple of days. You need to check out what the specific needs of your specific tree are. If you have access to a library, you may find many good books there, or do a search for the name of your tree + bonsai, on the internet. Get yourself a spray bottle too, most bonsai like to be sprayed with water to keep up the humidity levels...it can also keep your kitty away. I recently was at a really lovely bonsai place, hundreds of thousands of bonsai, and I was shocked at how HUMID it was. That is for the indoor, tropical bonsai. Best thing is, if you want to have bonsai, is to get yourself a nice book.
