This is the first time I've tried growing this verbena...after it finishes blooming, will it rebloom if I cut it back? I've read that it reseeds well, so maybe I should let it go to seed so it will spread. Any suggestions?

Yes, Alankhart, it does reseed!!! That is one of my most favorite plants. I love the latin names.......... I had some, very nice, whispy plant. And it did reseed nicely for me. I used it for cut flowers too!! I'm not sure about zones, I'm a 5 here and it may not withstand a really bad winter... I didn't do anything to have it go "night~night" for the winter, picked some and let the rest go to seed. I didn't per~say cut back the flowers, but when I cut them for the bouquets, they did send out more flower buds. I like the color. And for a bouquet, it was a nice touch in the middle of bigger flowers. (Like a statis or gypsophillia ~sp?) Something different!! Hope that helps!!!! Weezie

Alan, I have been thinking of you!!! I responded to your question here before. I had grown them, it did reseed the first yr. and last yr. I didn't see it. Thought maybe it was too cold for it or it didn't flower fast enough. But guess what I've got reflowering in my garden??? Yep, you guessed it!! Which I'm amazed at because it didn't come back last yr. (Oh, I do take that back, it ended up in my mom's yard the yr. before that, two plants in the lawn and I just happened to reconize it.) But I think what I did was use it in the compost and the seeds reseededd. Of course maybe I used the wrong bin of compost last year and that's why I didn't get any?????? It is such a nice plant. There is a road side verbena up here I just love too, gotta get me some. Weezie

So you've been thinking about me, huh??? Happy thought I hope! :-) I decided to cut mine back this year to see if they would rebloom, and they did! I trimmed some all the way back to about 2" from the base and the others just a few inches below the faded bloom, and all of them formed side branches where I had cut and bloomed again about 4 or 5 weeks after. Because it isn't reliably hardy in my area I have a hard time finding any more to plant at area nurseries...so I think I may start my own from seed next year.

Alan, Only good thoughts!! Mostly thinking about the verbena to be honest. But I wonder what your other half would say??? Any how, did I send you info on the verbena? http://www.floridata.com/ref/v/verb_bon.cfm
It says if you pinch them back it'll produce it'll produce a bushier type plant (instead of the tall one that's easily tipped over!!)
And can be started by the tip cuttings right about now.... Check it out................. I can't do the stem cuttings because of my zone, and no where's really to over winter the plant, NO windows without children!!! If you know what I mean. So try the tip rooting. I would assume you cut the tip, strip the side shoots or flowers or leaves and either straight into the dirt or dip in root~tone and do it with that??????????? Give it a try and let me know!!!!! It also said that it should be hardy in your zone, from like 7 thru 11.... I'm 5 and the seeds over winter.... Weezie
