I live in the Central Valley. I have what is referred to as a tulip tree, but I'm not sure of the actual name or how to care for it. Anyone have the info?

There are two possibilities. You could either be talking abou the Tulip Poplar or the Teacup Magnolia. The latter blooms in the early Spring, with the flowers blooming first. Very pretty. I don't know the botanical name, but maybe this will help a little.
