Today I looked out and my suet holders were almost empty!
I was out of suet cakes and decided to make my own, so I got on the internet to find some recipes.
Suet Cakes (For BIRDS!)

I, of course, didn't have any SUET to make the cakes, but used some bacon grease, and just improvised. Put them in the frig while I went to buy some "store bought" suet cakes, and they were solid when I got back, so I put them in the holders. The birds are chowing down on them as I post this!

thanks AFGreyParrot. I'm thinking I'll use these recipes for my birds, and for my garden club.

Great Recipes!
One of my kids favorite crafts is peanut butter tubes for the birds.
We take empty toilet paper rolls, cut 1 small hole near the top(to hang on a nail),cover completely with peanut butter(we like crunchy)then roll in bird seed until completely covered and hang on a pole, tree or fence. All the birds seem to love them, from woodpeckers to titmouses. When the birds are done simply toss in the trash. The roll will last about a week in the weather, if the peanut butter lasts that long.

Very Good Cindy, and this time of the year..ONLY use suet cakes. The birds benefit more from suet, un-rendered;However, it will become Rancid in warm weather and make the lil guys sick, So, Please, if you haven't taken your suet bags down from the winter,DO IT NOW

Phil and Laura, are you saying not to do the peanut butter thing this time of year? I'm thinking of using this idea along with the suet cakes for my garden club program this month.

My birds eat 2 suet cakes a DAY. Do you think it's still not a good idea? You have no idea how many birds I feed. Hundreds are in my bird garden constantly. Have to fill the feeders at least twice a day. I put 2 suet cakes out every morning, and by late afternoon they are history.

NO..No, You misunderstood (or I explained it all wrong) The suet cakes and the peanut butter are GREAT... It is the un-rendered, slab"o"suet from the butcher that will go rancid!! Please carry on! [grin] [wayey]

Gotcha!!! I don't use that, even in my homemade cakes. Too much trouble!
Thanks!
