#1 is a Rhododendron named Cheer #2 is a Skunk Cabbage (Lysichton americanum) growing down in the bogs. #3 took offense to being called a squirrel, and asked that I let you know that he is a chipmunk. Yes.... he comes very close to me (like on my desk for his daily morning raisins) Plants: 11227 | From: Cedar Hill Washington | Registered: Aug 2002

Since you haven't seen one before, Chrissy... This Skunk Cabbage's leaves are each about 18 inches long. (some mature plants have much larger leaves.) This plant is 30-36 inches in diameter. (I have one that is almost 5 feet across) The flower stands about 15 inches tall... its aroma is the reason for the plants name. A Skunk Cabbage is definately not a sniffer! What a cutie! Though you can have mine also when it's strawberry time - they always take one bite and discard just as the berries ripen!
We have skunk cabbage in what is left of the woods behind us - actually part of the new house that's there now... BOY DOES IT STINK!!! (yes the house does too - they weren't supposed to build on the wetlands back there!!! ) But I've never actually seen the skunk flower bloom - thanks for sharing, Bill!
