I have twenty one Columbines (at least) growing in my gardens on Cedar Hill. Fourteen of them are distinctly different. Some of them are named varieties, but the majority of them are hybrids that evolved here in the gardens by cross pollination and subsequent self seeding. If possible I will identify the particular variety, otherwise you can just consider them to be Cedar Hill hybrids!

The fairyland is mighty different isn't it? So if I get one plant of say each primary and secondary color and plant them 18" apart I'm likely to have all kinds of colors and combinations after a few years? I was wondering about how long it takes a columbine to produce babys from the root. It apears that a baby is growing a couple of inches from my dark purple one but I only planted it a little while ago.

Yes indeed! Some of the hybrids changes may be very subtle, and other times they can be very dramatic! Its always fun when you find a seedling growing because you'll never know what to expect until it opens...

I believe that Columbines can only be propagated by seed. I'd guess that you just got a bonus seed in the pot that you bought and it was just slow to germinate.

You may have already seen these other Columbine pages, but I had to correct some of the photo's links (nobody even told me they were only seeing the dreaded red X's ) Anyway, while doing that I decided to link all 4 pages together for you and all our future visitors...
Enjoy!!

If I had a printer I'd be doing the same thing. I want to get some big prints to frame and put on the wall but who can decide with this selection to choose from.
Love it Mr. Bill!
